Jay,
Yes, of course. The Ecus are sealed, and
they do have to stay sealed.
As I described previously, I made an
small aluminum cover which is air-tight
sealed with epoxy glued to the ecu
plastic cover.
This way the air of the internal fan
circulates only within the Ecu.
There is no outside air leak.
There is quite a bit of additional heat
exchange through the new aluminum cover,
which is also cooled by the external fan.
In short, the Ecu is still sealed, and
as you say, that's important.
I should have taken some photos when
I did this, but I thought it was too
unorthodox to recommend to others.
But I don't have any problems with
that setup, and my vanagon hasn't given me any
driveability problems since.
I have since come to believe that many
vanagon problems are caused by overheating Ecus.
