Subject: camping in lasson and chester

Living in the SF bay area you learn to reserve ahead for camping. Because of a head leak I had neglected to do this. Having fixed the leak this spring I was ready to camp for the 4th but uncertain where to go. One area that is less traveled is Lasson near Chester. My wife's only condition was she wanted showers. Heading north up I5 the summer heat was nice compared to the foggy bay area. It is a quick run to red bluff where you begin to head east and up the mountains away from the heat of the valley towards chester. On most days you can see Shasta as you work your way toward lasson. Just before mineral there is a federal campground (no showers)$15.00 but worth considering as it has a stream running near by. You could see the fish looking up at you. Past mineral near mill creek road you will find "Child's Meadow Resorts" 15 bucks a night with showers. Site number ten is perfect for a westy. The campsite sits next to the national forest so there is plenty of wood. Kinda of close to the road but it becomes a acceptable road after 10pm. In the morning the cows will wake you as the sun comes up. In lasson proper there are some campsites at summit lake. The places was so nice that it was acceptable to my wife even without showers. Near Chester there is "north shore campground" A bit too civilized for me but near the lake if that is what you want. Just off the road from north shore is the "last chance campgound" about 4 miles in it has a lovely creek and very few campers. A pg&e campground with pit toilets but fresh water$15 it is by far the most remote. It has a bug problem, hungry bugs but the bugs are very healthy. No weird viruses or anything, but bring lots of bug juice. Further east in Westwood was the 5th of July festival. This is logging country and there was ax throwing, chainsaw and bow saw contests and just lots of nice people. Kind of a different light on environmental issues. I saw in the woods, examples of "thinning the forest" by the lumber companies. It was not pretty but it was not ugly either. Just practical when you consider the alternative that I have seen in Yellowstone and Yosemite. This was and still is a good year for lasson. Lots of snow and a cold June have left the mountain with abundant summer snow. You could still cross country ski. Major point here is this is where to go when you need a last minute place or just want a place that does not have hoards of people. happy 4th, gary
