Jumper the idle stabilizer (connect the two leads together). Factory is 5
ATDC, but the DH's run better advanced to 5 BTDC. The V notch is 5 ATDC,
the round U notch is actually TDC, used for valve adjustment or whatever.
Line this up with the case split. Estimate the distance from V to U is 5
degrees. You can try setting it at TDC and see how it runs. My Boston Bob
rebuild conveniently came with a 2.1 pulley, so I use the V mark which is 5
BTDC with Bob's blessing.

If you have an inductive timing light, find the spark plug wire to No. 1
cylinder, put the inductive pick-up lead (the clamp-on) over that wire. For
power, look at the back of the alternator: connect the the + lead (red
clip)
over the large alternator connection, as this is a direct connection to (+)
positive side of the battery via the starter motor. This is a large
connector, protected by a black insulator piece, with a 13mm nut on a stud.
12V are always present at this connection, with the car running or not. The
black lead of the timing light goes to any good ground. like the PS pump
bracket. Beware of the timing light leads not to get tangled up with the
belts with the engine is running!. My understandig is that the correct
timing is 5 deg. BTDC, but the problem is to find out what notch on the
pulley corresponds to the famous 5 deg. Good luck and I hope I explained
myself sufficiently on this subject.
