I'm already using that space for my gauges, though, so I'll probably mount mine on top of the metal part of the dash, next to the instrument binnacle. I think if I mount it vertically in front of the shifter it'll be too hard to read the display, though I may experiment with that, too. If I choose to do it on top of the metal part of the dash, I'll probably need to make some kind of shim to put under the mounting bracket to make up for the inward slope of the dash and get a good viewing angle on the LCD. My radio is a Ranger RCI-2950, an older rig, so it doesn't have the wide display viewing angle some modern radios do. Vanagons are great for mounting stuff on top of the dash because they have such a low dash compared to the seating position. If I mounted something on top of the dash of my Honda, I wouldn't be able to see out. ;) Safety reminder: No matter where you mount your radio, make sure it's secured well so it doesn't become a projectile in a crash.
