Subject: Re: Automatic Transmissions

Hi, John, I'm with you in this subject. I paid 750 for a good automatic
transmission from a vanagon wrecking yard in Sacramento, but I went to the
process of taking my transmission completely apart, photograph every step of
the process and then try to put together a comprehensive guide to repair an
automatic transmission. The probem is that some parts are really hard (if
not impossible) to find, unless you go to the VW dealer. For example: my
transmission blew the ring and pinion gears, the main shaft bearings and
seals and mixed the gear oil with the automatic transmission fluid. I cannot
find anybody that sells a ring and pinion gear set. Now, those who rebuild
auto transmissions claim to install new ring and pinion gears, but I dont
know where they get them, because a good rebuilt transmission sells for
$1600 to $2,000. Vw dealer price for the ring and pinion gear set is $1,300.
So I don't see how they can make any money if they do a real complete
rebuild. Some seals, like the small oil seal on the governor shaft can only
come from VW. some special washers and thrust bearings inside the clutch
packs are only available from VW, prepaid and special order. I don't see
where anyone that rebuilds an automatic transmission can make any money if
they really replace everything that needs to be replaced to be good for
another 150,000 miles. I have a collection of digital photos that I will put
on a cd and offer for anybody interested in buying them for $5 plus s&h, and
includes everything inside the clutch packs, the valve body and the final
drive. If anyone has leads on parts, please let meknow. Thanks. Armando
