Try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder first. You can reach it from the
engine compartment. You might be surprised at what comes out.

Subject: clutch not working
I have no experience w/ clutch repair of any kind. my 1990 with 4 speed
just began not disengaging. Had to try double clutching to get home 30
miles. When home, began to disengage but not 100%.
when my wife pushes in the clutch I hear a loud creaking noise within the
clutch housing (engine off).
The brake fluid was down to min last week, added a name brand to top off to
max, said was good for brake/clutch systems. first time I've added since
bought over year ago.
I am sure that I'll have a shop work on it.
without looking through the archives; can anybody give me the down & dirty
on what this usually means? Can I blame my wife (primary driver)?

bonus "classic" vanagon content:
This van has been trouble free. Tonight we were just arriving at this cool
block party( w/ 2 little kids) in "downtown" Elkhart Lake (Road America)
Wisconsin. About 5-6 members of the D.B.G.(regional type II club) had
assembled early to get prime parking/ hang out spot on the street. I
thought I'd show up and just say hi. There's thousands of people milling
about for a street party for the "vintage car club of Chicago". Just as
I'm downshifting to stop and wave---clunk, burp, snub, start, cough, etc
PEOPLE IN WAY. Vanagone syndrome?? Overheating?? WE GOTTA GET THE HECK
OUTTA HERE!
Actually would not have been a bad place to break down if we could have got
a parking spot. I'm sure the air cooled guys would help out; after having
the normal laugh at the expense of the wbx.
