Subject: exhaust and valve noise
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"
So it has been about 2 weeks or so since I finished my head gasket job on my
91 GL. The valves were at zero lash for awhile and as I drove it and they
pumped up I moved them to their present position of 1 turn beyond .006".
They have all seemed to quiet down except for what sounds like cylinder # 3.
My first question is should I think about running some Marvel Oil
through the engine to see if this helps the valve noise I still seem to be
hearing? I have done this before and it has helped, but my question is
really lifter on the order of how I know if it is just a sticky lifter, an
air locked valve or a valve/lifter going bad? The van runs good, not great
sounds a bit noisy/loud (see below) and so not quite right... I have not
timed her yet...trying to get the valve noise etc down and then work on the
timing.
The other thing that factors into this is that I seem to have an exhaust
leak just after the exhaust manifold, probably since I did not replace the
round O gasket that joins the manifold to the exhaust pipe leading to the
catalytic converter. I am anticipating replacing this gasket asap (thought
I could get away with reusing the old one!). So the exhaust leak is
somewhat muffling (no pun intended) the valve noise and I really can't make
out how bad the valve clatter is, anyway my real question is... Bentley
shows on page 26.9 "5 diaphragm springs, washer and nut" around the flange
of the previously mentioned exhaust pipe. When I disassembled the exhaust
to do the head gasket there wasn't anything like this. So... do others have
this setup? What exactly are these diaphragm springs?? I have just used
some bolts, nuts and washers from my FLAPS.
I believe all my other exhaust components are ok and new gaskets were reused
everywhere else that disassembly took place. Any thoughts or words of
wisdom? Thanks
