Well, I did fix it myself, but with a new gear. I ordered 3 for like $60,
one went in my '89 Jetta, another went in my friend's '87 Vanagon and the
other is on the shelf for my '85 Westy. It is a little like herding
cats--getting all the gears lined up--but it is possible. Two successful
fixes. By the way, when you get ready to replace the speedo needle, there
is a line below the "0" peg on the face. Line up the needle with line and
push it on the stem. Lift the needle up over the peg and you are set.
This pre-loads the clockspring on the speedo.

I agree totally. After 3 or 4 repairs I took mine in to get a rebuild. Only
$85 after a quote of $145. Money well spent. William
