The bushings are the rubber pieces on top of the front shock stem. The cups are the dished washers that squeeze the bushing and draw up the shock into the a-arm. I found the KYB were squeezed down to the point where the shoulder of the shock below the threaded part of the stem was banging up against the bottom side of the cup. I made some thicker bushings out of some rubber stoppers and the noise was gone. I had unfortunately thrown out my VW bushings and cups with my old shocks.
