They were stock on all 1.9 & 2.1 buses sold everywhere but USA, it seems (dunno about the aircooled 1.6s though!). My 84 was standard 5-speed (the 094 trans).

Not really. 1st is a crawler gear, and I found it useless for on-road driving. If 5th is tsaller than an 091/1 4th (4-speed), it'll be marginally.

1984 gas 094 ratios (1st-5th): 4.11 2.33 1.48 1.02 0.77
