These are a pain to replace unless you remove the airbox and runners. The gap between the runners and the airbox flange is very small, maybe 1/2" IIRC. I decided to change mine when I replaced all the vacuum lines and fuel lines. The VW dealer could not remember anyone ever ordering these before. Mine were a little frayed on the ends, but they really only have to seal that small gap in the center. I cut the old crimp clamps off and replaced with stainless worm-gear type, but you could probably go clamp-free. They really fit tight and it is only holding vacuum. Worth removing the airbox and use a little Armorall or soap to slide them on. I don't see how one of these could have come loose unless it was dry-rotted and split open!
