I think the best teenage vehicle is what I grew up with - a Rabbit diesel... (relatively) good handling, maneuverability, but absolutely no acceleration. If you wanted to do something crazy, you had to plan way in advance, and getting teenagers to pay attention and plan in advance is what it's all about!!

Thanks for all the stories and advice, guys. I've got the sacred Westy and a rusty Escort, and really want a daily driver Carat. I think Emily will learn to drive on the Escort, and learn to worship the sacred metal box before she ever drives it. Hopefully it won't be cool enough to be seen in. I grew up pleading with my father to buy a bus instead of an Olds wagon. Had the brochures and everything. Nope, Cutlas Cruiser. Roger Van Till '89 Westy "The Moose Lounge" '92 Escort "The Turd"
