If it's converted, you should see some attachments put on the service ports (the nozzles). The low side should be attached to a fatter pipe than the high side and should also have the larger of the two attachments. Also, if you have red and blue caps, go for the blue one.

If your compressor is not engaging, then your system is almost empty. If it kicks on and off frequently, then you're low on refrigerant. Either way, I recommend getting the conversion kit because it will have the quick connect hose that you will need to fill the system. The cans also have the lubricant that your system might need.

When the time comes to fill it, you have to have the engine running and the A/C on for the duration of the process. So, it's generally a good idea to fill it until cold air blows out (usually 2-2½ cans).

It's much easier than it looks. Trust me. :)
