--------------- ""What would be wrong with roughing up the little shaft the gear goes on"" --------------- I did that one myself. I roughed up the shaft a little too much, and had to pound the gear back on. In the process of beating on the thing, the position of the number rolls slipped and now my odo shows a blank line, with numbers slightly visible on top and bottom. If it bugged me, I could fix it, but I'm working on other stuff that's more important. Be gentle when roughing up your shaft. (sounds like a euphemism.....)
