Mr. Doug, I learned it is much better and easier to take the converter off with the muffler. It will cost you for another gasket, but it is a good idea to inspect the inside of converter while it is off for plugging. This is good time to do this, and much easier to work on the floor or bench than up in the machine. Good Evening,
