Its bad contacts. Look where the door meets the pillar. You will see four contacts. Only three are used (I think the top three). When these get dirty, the electronic locks on the slide door do not work. On an 88, I polished them nicely on the door and pillar but they still did not work. I noticed that they were not exactly lined up - the pillar appeared to be slightly higher than the door contacts. I filed down the very tops of all four contacts at a 45 degree angle just slightly, and everything worked well.
