Whelp... On the advice of several people I pulled the air filter unit out
again and checked all the connections under and around it to see if I
knocked anything loose... Nope, everything seems to be connected properly,
the wires seem to be going to the right places, cap and rotor are on
correctly...
I DID find something bad when I pulled the air box and was checking to
ensure the fuel injectors were seated properly. I wiggled the fuel lines
under the air box and pphhhttt... A nice little jet of gas shot straight up
in the air. Not good, so I'm having her towed to the local import place to
have them replace the fuel lines and figure out what I did wrong. While
she's there I'll have them do the oil change and replace the fuel filter
too...
Sigh...

Wait is that diagram correct? The one at
http://www.actionimport.com/Tech_Files/Tech_dist.htm ?
Is "Front of car" in the right place for the vanagon? If not, then I've got
it backwards, if it is... Then I've got it right but she still wont start :(

This doesn't answer your specific question but may come in handy at times.
Engine layout: cylinders in right: 1 and 2; on the left: 3 and 4. 1 and 3
are across from each other; 2 and 4 across from each other. # 1 cylinder is
nearest the flywheel. Firing order: 1-4-3-2. Distributor rotor rotation is
clockwise. #1 cylinder wire on the dist. cap is nearest the main engine
pulley, directly above the distributor tightening nut below. Starting there,
be sure the wires on the distributor, in clockwise rotation order, go to
cylinders 1-4-3-2. Hope that helps ............ and fixes your tune up. Bob

Ok, I think I screwed up... Changed spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires and air
filter today... Engine wouldn't start. Put all the old stuff back in,
thinking I'd go one at a time to see where the problem was, engine wouldn't
start with all the old stuff back in... It cranks, tries to turn over but
never does. I gapped the plugs to .28, made sure all the wires and the cap
were nice and tight... Is the firing order in the Bentley or owners manual?
I can't seem to find it...
Any suggestions? Feel free to email me, I'll be back in to check every so
often, or gimme a call (Collect even!) at 609-434-0369
Thanks,
