My '86 Westy Weekender has 50,000 miles on a VW of Canada rebuild and sporadically exhibits the EXACT same problem with lifter noise you describe. Always disappears upon warm-up it is unsettling to drive off down the road with that tap tap tapping in my ears.

Hi David
I have the same problem with my Westy 87 (lifter noise). If I turn around my
Westy for a short time, I know the day after I use it, the lifters will make
noise. I guess that is the way these flat four work.
