I'm told some people have had success by cranking up the fueling screw (aka. the "smoke screw") on the 1.6 pump to increase fuel delivery. This would be a good thing to look for in the archives of the Audi-VW-Diesel yahoo group, or post there and ask about it. I know it's been discussed there.

If you do go to the 1.9 pump you will need different injection lines as well. Some people have bent the 1.6 lines to fit, but most of them ended up with broken lines later. A broken line can strand you, of course.
