It is fairly well known in the midwest, though I'd never heard of it before moving here from northern NY. The standard phrasing around here is "pour half a can in the oil a few miles before a change, and the other half in the gas tank". Seems to be a decent petroleum based solvent.

Another use that I can say seems to work is getting rid of carbon deposits in the cylinder heads in a jiffy. You run the engine at a high idle and insert a vacuum line in the can. "Throttle" the amount being pulled from the can by dipping the line in and out and also give more real throttle so as not to stall the engine. 3 hands help. The exhaust will really look bad during this. Use the whole can. To really do a good job, do it untill it stalls the engine, then let it sit for 10 minutes or so before restarting. I'd recommending changing the oil after this. And yes, you are probably washing the cylinder walls a bit during it too, so it could add some wear. I'd bet not much, since you aren't doing this for extended periods. I did this on my 84 GTI (D Street Prepared), and it did get rid of a mild knock I had on a couple cylinders. Do be careful doing this as you can get a hydraulic lock fairly easily. That would be bad at any significant rpms. Yes, I did lock my engine, no nothing broke. :) Had to crank it over backwards to unlock it.

YMMV tom
