I posted the following request a few days ago and just thought some might be interested in the solution. Thanks to Kim Brennan and Zoran Mladen for their suggestions.

"The AC blower in the overhead unit on my 85 Vanagon has died. I believe this was an after market addition. Does any one know where a replacement blower might be found for such a unit? It has a squirrel cage on each end for the motor."

Opening up the unit I found all of the wires and connectors in good shape but the blower cages were rubbing on the blower housing giving a burning smell of plastic rubbing on plastic with lots of noise which smelled not unlike a burning electrical equipment. The motor was fine after a quick paint job and replacement of the foam pad between the motor and its mounting bracket. The front motor mount panel that the blowers attach to was warped from old age and would no longer hold the blower housings in place, hence the rubbing with the cages. I tried wedging a strip of mahogany about 1/4 by 3/4 by 10 inches between the blower housing and the motor flange to stiffen this surface and it did the job. Just put two screws in to keep it in place. The wood chosen was just some scraps but mahogany is very rot resistant so should last for a long time. Put it all back together, turned it on and lots of noise and little air flow. Yep, after a little thought I guessed I put the motor and cages in backwards. So took it all apart reversed the motor and put it back together after uttering a few &%#@*# at my lack of careful thought during assembly.

It now works fine.
