Definitely tranny time and the longer you wait, the more it will cost. The clutch plates are shot and you are running metal to metal and/or one of the hub bushings are damaged causing internal leakage. Anyway, it has to be repaired.

SO I have been having a rather annoying problem with my 83 Auto Vanagon.

First and Second gear slip like crazy and whine away until suddenly, clunk they stop slipping, there is quite a distinct noise when they stop slipping, almost like something popping into place. I put some "Magic" liquid in that was recommended by my Mechanic but it hasn't really done anything. 3rd Gear hasn't slipped at all, but first and second gear slip without fail until the clunk noise. Being that I live at the bottom of a hill its a rather tricky !

Any thoughts ? Does this mean new Tranny time ? Any advice would be appreciated.

Steve
