I always have starters, alternators and such rebuilt by local shops. The price might be $10.00 higher but these guys need my business and I've never had any problems with quality or ever had one to fail requiring replacement or service. Keep in mind that I've been sticking to this policy since I first started buying auto parts back in 1956 so I'm pretty much convinced that this is the way to go. Just try finding a Case, Tow Motor, Allis Chalmers, Farmall, Hyster starter or generator from the mass merchandisers and you might start to see my point. I replaced a Motorola alternator on a 66 Bus and the local shop balanced the fan on the mounting plate free with the rebuild job ............. this procedure is near imperative on Type I VW engines. That thing just isn't part of any NAPA plan.
