Does Brad still own that place? I used to work with him at a place called Harvey's VW in Leucadia back in the early '80s. Too funny...

Cheers,

Jeff

I took off in my '82 headed for Texas, but before I got out of San Diego county ( this is after spending $3100.00 to have it made mechanically reliable!) when my battery and oxs light came on. This had happened before on my '87, and it turned out to be a broken ground wire to the alternator. So, I pulled over, unloaded all my crap and checked the engine. All the wiring, belts, etc. seemed fine. So, I decided to drive it back to the shop that had done the work. Being Saturday, they weren't open. As I got near where I was going, people began telling me my Westy was smoking. Indeed, I looked like a destroyer laying a smoke screen for the fleet! I assumed I had a oil leak onto the exhaust, but the oil warning light hadn't come on yet, so I pulled over and checked the oil - engine very hot, but plenty of oil. So, I kept driving, with everyone telling me I was on fire. I turned on the heater to help cool the motor, and the cab filled with smoke. I pulled over again and checked the oil when the light came on, put in half a quart, drove on. Finally, I pulled over and called a tow truck. The mechanics tell me what happened is the fan pulley backed off the crankshaft end and was no longer driving the fan or the alternator. The smoke came from the overheated engine. They haven't told me the extent of the damage, or what they will fix gratis, or if they will comp me for the tow. Should I sue them if they try to get me to pay more? This is Brad's Foreign Car Repair in Encinitas, CA.

The Trundler '82 Westy? '87 Westy
