I agree with you for the most part, but not everyone who adds a subwoofer installs it with the idea of getting high volume levels. I have an 8" subwoofer tube in my Honda hatchback. I don't use it for "thumping", I just use it to add a little low end so I get sound closer to what I get from a decent set of home speakers. There's no room for big speakers in the stock locations of a Civic so this is the only way to get decent bass response. The amp connected to the sub is adjusted so it matches nicely with the volume level of the existing speakers -- tweaking it up to vibrate the windows would defeat the purpose.
