I have the Fiamma bike rack on the back of my van, http://eurocampers.com/Fiammaracks.html and don't find that my bikes get very dirty back there. Of course if you travel dusty roads, then you have dirt.

My old '74 Westy had a rack on the front. The bug splatter was so nasty that I would never consider carrying bikes on the front again. I still have the Westy, but now use a Fiamma hatch rack.
