I have the Fiamma bike rack on the back of my van,

and don't find that my bikes get very dirty back there.  Of course if you
travel dusty roads, then you have dirt.

My old '74 Westy had a rack on the front.  The bug splatter was so nasty
that I would never consider carrying bikes on the front again.  I still have
the Westy, but now use a Fiamma hatch rack.
