This comes up periodically on the list, and I have chased my tail a few
times trying to get these relays. (I'd like one myself!) The problem is
that the original VW car programmable relays have been superceded by VW
about four times, and if you follow the trail of superceded numbers it
eventually it takes you to a relay that is not programmable at all, but
just intermittant like the stock Vanagon one. I ordered from three
different relay vendors and got three non-programmable relays. I then
tried tracking it down in the VW dealer parts book. Same deal - one part
number superceded to another, which superceded to another, which
superceded to another, which superceded to the very same
non-programmable one that my aftermarket suppliers had been sending me
all along! So finally, after spending way too much time and ending up
with a small pile of unwanted relays, I gave up. I do recall that
someone posted a source here a while back for one that really was
programmable, so those interested should check the archives. If you opt
to chance it and buy one somewhere else, check on their return policy
first, as often electrical items are not returnable and you may be stuck
with it even if it proves not to be programmable. Or just try to find an
original one in a junkyard, where they're not too uncommon.
