The shim should not have been reused. They were obviously too lazy to wait for replacements. The shim may not have been damaged from incorrect assembly. I have frequently seen these wear out on the 2.1L engines. There are actually 2 different types of shims used here. One large OD that is only available in one thickness. This one goes against the thrust bearing. The other style is smaller in OD and is available in a number of thicknesses to set the final end play.

I went to a semi-local repair shop to have them set the end-play of my crank. The only problem is that one of the shims was split due to a previous engine mis-assembly of the outer thrust washer. I just found out that they re-used that shim. The shim is split about 1.5" around 1/3 of the way in from the outermost edge. It doesn't lie flat, and that split is bent over by a couple material thicknesses.

Is this a part that needs to be replaced? The shop specializes is vw busses, and i don't, but this seems wrong to me.

Any input would be appreciated.
