Tonight I ran through all the Bentley checks for the ECU harness, and found no problems, even while violently jiggling/pulling on the hall sender wiring. I added a large ground directly from ECU 19 to the block, no change. The van will now barely run 10 seconds without stalling.

I've checked everything that has been suggested so far I think, but plan on checking the timing and idle again, just in case. I don't believe the timing is off, since it did run very well until just recently, when it wasn't bucking and sputtering. The hall sender still sounds like a likely cause, but short of building a Digitool, I can't see any way to actively monitor it, and it checks out fine with engine off.

ps: I found the ECU 19 ground (separate brown wire from harness) does indeed end in a ground stud under/behind the water tank. This is on an '88 Westy, CDN model.
