Probably conincidence or vibration related. Check the ground connections. The headlight grounds are located above the fuse box. A better fix would be to make new ground connections right near the lights. Connect that brown wire to the bulbs using ring terminals and the sheet metal screws that hold the light assemblies in.

I have a puzzle for which I hope the list can offer some assistance. I just moved from New Orleans back to Fort Collins, CO, and I used a car carrier behind a Penske truck to bring my vanagon with me. All appears to have arrived in Colorado intact, but for some reason the headlights (both low and high) don't come on when the switch is operated. The high beam indicator on the dash works, and all of the parking lights/turn signal lights/reverse lights work. All other electrical appliances work. The fuses all look good.

So, any ideas what's going on? I've towed the vanagon like this over longer stretches without this problem arising. It would be great to have some guidance before I just start replacing parts, and I realize that the towing and headlight failure could just be coincidental.

Thanks, David

By the way, in eight years of owning vanagons, I've never had to replace a headlight bulb. Any instructions in this regard (whether or not this is the problem) would be much appreciated.
