i replaced one that broke in the same place. had no trouble. yes, the top part slides off and the new one slides on, by hand. i used vasoline on mine. sprayed the bottom with penetrating oil night before. from what i remember, i think i was able to just hammer the broken stub at the bottom down and it fell out, as you describe. mine was easy.
