Subject: Extra fuel filter before pump?
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

In the ongoing saga of my '88 Westy drivability woes, I tried two more things tonight (this is now a nightly ritual...)

1. Took apart ECU and resoldered all 25 pins from connector to board, just in case any were cracked. No change.

2. Removed fuel line from tank and drained approx 1 litre of gas into clean container. Found a fair bit of crud, which may have fallen off hose, so I did it again, carefully ensuring nothing fell off hose this time. Two things I noticed: I still got more crud, but only got about 250ml of gas - perhaps I lost prime when I raised the hose after the first liter? Should I get a flow of gas whenever lowering the hose from the fuel pump end (tank is half full)?

With the amount of crud, I'm now thinking perhaps my filter is plugged (1 year old, less than 10k). Is it safe to install a clear plastic filter between tank and pump to monitor things? If there really is that much crud in the tank, then I'll need to drop it I assume... :-(
