I have a 1984 vanagon with R12 and still runs great!. I did some work on it in 1992 but nothing since. Unless you count the time the hose vibrated loose from the compressor and dumped all freon. I now make sure the fitting is tight every time I "get under the hood". And we all know that averages at least once a month. :)
