I just reworked my 87 Vanagon Speedo. Problem was delrin bearing where cable inserts. Pulled out and made improved copy on lathe. (Should be a cheap part, but where to get it?). Intermittent operation had occurred due to previous attempt to lubricate it. Gunk had gotten on the close fitting aluminum cup and magnet which are right above it. To clean them up I had to disassemble. Difficult part was pulling the pointer, and the split brass spring clamp on the pointer shaft. You must make a tiny puller! I did not, and broke the shaft. Had to make a new one which was not easy. The other trick is that before taking off the pointer, gently skip it over the bottom end stop, and carefully note where it is happy to point. Average several tries. Then during reassembly be sure it is in the same spot. Then gently lift it back where ti belongs. All is well now on mine.
