I also had a lifter prime problem when I did my first conversion, not realizing that the pick-up tube had a pressure relief valve.

I pulled the oil pan off, and removed the pressure valve plunger- polished the bore and the plunger, and reassembled. That was the end to the lifter noise and oil light on at start up.

I am changing my pump tomorrow since I have the engine out to do a clutch job, I might as well change this.

When you got a new pump, it's possible you got half a new pump, the top part with the gears for a 1.8 gas, and the bottom part the Diesel pick up tube.

As Mark said it is used and not new, the pick-up tube.

Otherwise a new pump would mean two new pumps, with only the needed half of each one used, since the Diesel shaft is too long, and the gas inline-four pump pick-up tube can't be used on a Diesel conversion.

Also, the pick-up tube pump gear surface if deeply worn should be resurfaced before using - low oil pressure can be the result of a worn surface.

There are two dimensions of pump gears- 26 mm and 30 mm . If you have the 26 mm, switch to the higher volume pump.

This helps a lot on the I-4 since it takes a few seconds less for the oil to reach the bearings and lifters using the high volume pump.

The high volume pump is just that, it flows more oil- even the pressure relief valve plunger is bigger.

The 50 degree mount angle requires a diesel Vanagon oil pan AND oil pickup tube. I assume the mechanic knows this and is using the right stuff. If he is using a used diesel Vanagon oil pickup tube then that is the likely problem. The oil pressure relief valve is built into the pickup tube. If it came from an engine that failed small bits of engine debris may be jamming the relief valve in a partly opened position and then the oil pump sucks air at low rpms. The oil pan must be removed and then the pickup tube can be removed for close inspection. I have seen this problem twice.
