There are going to be some that will tell you that the head can be removed without pulling the engine, it can be done but it is so much easer to pull the engine and get everything where you can get to it without hurting yourself. I will always vote for pulling the engine. Without pulling the engine its very hard to get everything back on right and torqued down. That said help yourself and do it the right way, pull the engine.
