On the subject of expansion tanks, there is a terrific opportunity to leak vapours from both the fittings on the expansion tanks and the cross-over tube. I had a gas smell whenever the tank was over 3/4 full as the connections at the expansion tank and the vinyl fittings on the tanks were loose in the rubber grommets. - Eric 80 Westie 'Rusty' -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of jon Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 12:43 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: gas leak
It could be one of several things: There are overflow/expansion hoses and tanks that come out of the top of the fuel tank. If any of the hoses or seals are bad, fuel will leak. Also, make sure there are not any holes in the expansion tanks (there is one in the front wheel well on both sides of the van). This only happens when the tank if full because fuel fills up in the fill pipe above the level of the tank. So, any holes in hoses etc. will cause fuel to leak until it is below the level of the hole. I've had two hoses go bad on mine, so I've been there, done that.
