I use both. My '85 came with the plastic inlet filter. I added the larger
metal downstrean filter. Can't hurt. There is something goofy about the
different inlet filters, though.... California '85s had only the metal
ones? I use a Purolator plastic filter. Get it at Pep Boys for a few $.
They also have the metal one listed.

Subject: Re: Fuel Filter question
OK, some people are telling me that the white plastic one was for the older
bus, all vanagons use the metal one...
Told my mechanic this and he said he ordered the part by the year of my van
and got the white plastic one... he also said that one side is bigger than
the
other and someone would have to do a lot of work to make this white one fit
in
if it's not stock...
any ideas? suggestions? should I tell him to go with the white plastic
one?
will that hurt anything? or should I tell him to fix everything so that it
fits the metal one? he's already changed all the fuel lines in the engine
cmpt...
thanks,
