My '87 has it too. The useful results of my own inquiry were: 1. VW knows about the problem, has a service bulletin on it, and sells a wiring harness "patch" for $166.00 2. Someone has devised a homegrown repair that uses a order of magnitude cheaper electronic part being soldered in that you can get at any Radio Shack. There's even a web page with instructions and photographs, unfortunatley I'm on a library computer and don't have access to my links, so I can't give it to you. Just knowing I CAN fix it has been enough for me so far. I'll get around to it when it irritates me enough.
