Thanks again to all have offered possible solutions. I still have NOT
solved the problem.
A local guy here with a vanagon shop of sorts offered some help by trying
the parts exchange shuffle. We tried a different headlight switch,
ignition switch, and turn signal stalk, but nothing made a difference.
He told me that the ignition switch just provides power to the load
reduction relay though, so though some of you have indicated that a bad
ignition switch could cause the symptoms I've described, he didn't
suspect the ignition switch. In addition, as I have mentioned before,
all other electrical appliances are working including those that require
a functioning load reduction relay. The vanagon guy could also hear the
load reduction relay clicking. We tried pulling fuse #9, which,
according to the wiring diagram, provides power to the high beam
indicator, and the high beam indicator remained ON with the headlight
switch on and the ignition switch on.
So, it seems that the suggestion of grounds is my best bet at this point.
I have dropped the fuse box to look at the ground connections behind it
on the fire wall, and though a couple of the spade connectors felt a
little loose, none were disconnected. I've had one recommendation to try
cleaning these connections, and I'll try this next. However, if anyone
has any more specific places to look given what I've described here and
below, it would be much appreciated.
