A nice quality new antenna is very cheap.

I have two later style Vanagon antennas (antennae?) that fully retract. These are the style that mounts on the front of the van, just below the windshield.

FM09V, from Jopex/Denmark, has a silver base and silver mast, and is $8.95: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=FM09V

FM09VH, from Hella, has a black base and silver mast, and is $14.95: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=FM09VH

I put the Hella on my '89 Westy recently and it looks every bit as good as the VW one (but is fully retractable).

Some early Vanagons have a side mounted antenna instead of a front mounted one: With black base, $8.95: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=SM40 With silver base, $17.95: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=ZVW6 Both have a silver non-retractable mast.
