My driver's side door locks automatically as soon as
it is closed, from inside or out. It will not open
unless I turn the key and hold the key so the interior
lock knob is up while operating the door handle. From
inside,you have to pull the lock knob up -it fights
you- and operate the door handle to get it to open.


Similar problems have been mentioned on the vanagon
list in the past, but the suggested approaches are
vague: check continuity in the door wires, etc.


I'd have a lot better luck diagnosing this if I could
understand the principle of what is going on, which I
don't..
