The holes are there to install the metal one, but you would need to find a
bracket. You would not have had both from the factory, only the plastic
inlet filter. I swear my '86 had both from the factory and I was the
original owner (Delaware purchase). I remember ordering a plastic filter
from a vendor and it would not fit--both inlet and outlet were the small
size hose barbs. It sat in my shelf for many years until I purchased my
'85 Westy. It fit the '85. IMHO, the inlet filter is critical to protect
the pump from junk coming from the tank. The large metal filter, by nature
of its bigger size, is probably (guessing here) a finer filter designed to
protect the injectors. I added the metal filter to my '85 by fabricating a
bracket. But like I said, the holes are already there in the frame to add
the factory bracket. California '85s would need those holes? The big
filter should last a long time, especially if you use both filters as I am.
The plastic ones should be changed pretty often. I keep a spare Purolator
in my tool box.

OK... just talked to the mechanic again... he put the square filter in
front
of the pump, but says there's no metal filter on there at all... and he
cant
find any brackets for the metal filter...
He also said that my emissions sticker says Federal... so I may not have a
CA
bus after all... I know the van was originally purchased in TX, moved to
CA
about a year later, where it lived for about 12-13 years and then was
driven
here to the east coast...
This filter thing is bugging me... I really trust this mechanic, he's
worked
on tons of VW's (including lots of work on my 76) and he says he's never
seen
2 filters on a vanagon.
So... do I leave the square one in front of the fuel pump and not use the
metal one? Do I have him put the metal one on after the fuel pump? or do I
have him move the square one back to after the fuel pump?
