Don't know if autos work this way, but the ECUs on the manuals have a high RPM cutout. I've scared my self half to death by forgetting to shift and then having the engine start acting like it was about to die -- usually I do this on some steep logging road in the middle of nowhere, so it really gets the blood presure up :-)

Anyway, just make sure that you weren't over reving.
