I used clamp on (gutter mount) bars on the roof on my '86 GL. I just kind of piled 4 bikes on top of each other and lashed them down. Made it to NH and back (from DE). Looked a little bit like the Beverly Hillbillys, but it worked. I got the clamps and bars for free. Half a dozen bungees, and you're set. I turned the handle bars sideways for better stacking. I may have taken off a few pedals, too. I use a suit-case bike now. Fits inside real easy.

I'm interested in a fold-away, inexpensive (under $75.00) bike rack capable of carrying 3 bikes. I don't need anything expensive or incredibly well-made because it will be for occasional recreational use. We are not serious bikers. Up to now, have traveled with 2 bikes inside the Vanagon (90 Multivan) but 3 would be too crowded and we couldn't take the dogs. Anybody have any ideas?
