While this is true for our Vanagon A/C systems, it's not always the case. Ford used a crimp system for connecting A/C components (cheaper than screw fittings) that was very likely to leak and failed under pressure but not vacuum! The system would hold a vacuum just fine but would leak out the freon charge in a week.
