Subject: alternator Qs?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

At my alternator the voltmeter reads 13.9 idle and even with the engine revved. At the battery with the engine revving at abut 3,000 RPM the voltmeter reads 13.40.

Is it time for an alternator or are those readings acceptable? (I have the 90 amp alt. in there). I read previous post by kim brennan stating batt should read 13.2 and with bus running the reading should be about 14. Mine isn't quite 14 at the alternator as you see. I guess I'm wondering what are the low limits and should I replace the alt.

FWIW

The battery after just being charged by sears this afternoon (who sold me the battery 3 years ago) reads 12.3 when I got it home. What they charged it to I don't know. But they said it was holding a charge fine so as not to have to replace it--we'll see.

It was dead this a.m. at about 8 volts and would not crank the engine.

Thanks Jeff 83.5 Westy LA,CA
