If you know Motronic OBD 1 or you are familiar with these engines then this is for you.

8 years ago I did a 1.8 91 Jetta conversion in my 82 Vanagon.

In 1999 I swapped to a 2.0, but kept the '91 FI system.

I had been fighting gremlins for about 8 months.

The gremlins told me I needed a new AFM.

But since I had the complete Motronic harness from the 95 Golf. I decided to replace the entire FI system. This system has advantages over the earlier one, including the on-board diagnostics as found in the 93-later VW's etc.

I'm splicing the management harness from a '95 2.0 Golf into my Vanagon, replacing the Digifant 2 system that I have been using since 1995 in my 82 Vanagon Westfalia with 2.0 Golf inline -four.

This conversion was done myself, but now that I'm stepping up to the next generation of fuel injection called Motronic, I am making some discoveries.

Searching the net I encountered information that I did'nt have .

One was the road speed sensor, which had this been overlooked, the engine would stall at rpms over 5,000.

#### Not so on the OBD-1 motors

115 hp is rated at 5400 rpm, so this had to be solved.

In the donor car, the Golf III has no speedometer cable, but a vehicle speed sensor that sends a digital signal from the transmission.

This signal is needed for the speedometer to work, and several other functions, including sending this road speed signal to the ECM, or engine computer.

The solution is to get the RSS module from the back of a A-2 Golf-Jetta with auto trans. The back of the Vanagon speedometer has a little black plastic tab labeled with the word "abgriff", German for 'pick-up" .This removable tab allows installation of the RSS.

Inside the Vanagon Speedometer is a little flywheel with a magnet.As it passes the RSS pick-up , a small current is generated- this impulse signal goes to the ECM .

So this is where the RSS pick-up or sender fits from the A-2 VW.

All that has to be done here is attach three wires to the pick-up and run them to the engine harness.

#### One small problem. The cruise control pickup will produce a sine wave, the VSS wants to see a square wave - some cases it will work, some it will not

A question I still need an answer for is an electrical diagram I found shows a oxygen sensor control unit.

What is this?

#### Beats me, the 68 pin ECU controls the O2 sensor - never heard of a separate unit.

Also, does anyone know if there is a site where I can get a electrical diagram for a 1995 Golf?
