If time permits, you can catch the ferry out of Whittier which will take
you and your Westy through Prince William Sound over to Valdez. From
Valdez you can drive up and over Thompson Pass - highest pass on the
road system in Alaska - and back to Glenallen. From there you can turn
back to Anchorage, or go to Tok, or go up through Summit and Paxon - the
turnoff onto the old road to McKinley Park. Used to be the only way to
McKinley Park. Going straight through the Paxon/Summit area however
takes you to Delta Junction and Ft Greeley Army Base. From there you go
the Tok Highway to Fairbanks or turn south and go to Tok where you exit
South across the Canadian Border back to Beaver to start back down the
Alaska Highway.
The Whittier/Valdez connection on the ferry is a really nice trip if you
can connect.
By the way, if while in Kenai, if the place is still in business, you
might check out Eadies (pronounced "E" "D's") Use to be part of Kenai's
red light district in the bad old days, but the nature of the business
was forced to change with the changing times, if you get my meaning. Lot
of history there.
And in Anchorage, hit the Museum while you are there. Some incredible
stuff there. Also visit the National Bank of Alaska (NBA - was bought
out by Wells Fargo - don't know if the name changed or not) corporate
headquarters building on the corner of "C" Street and Northern Lights
Blvd. . The Rasmusson family - founders of NBA - created a museum there
that is the best collection of Alaska native artifacts and historical
doccuments in the state. It's an incredible place. Good place to visit.
