Buhach (pronounced "bu" "hatch") is pure ground pyrethrum flowers.
Has been a mainstay mosquito repellent used in Alaska by those "in
the know". Old timers especially, and especially in the bush country
where the mosquitoes are REALLY bad. Used to be available in
virtually all the hardware stores. True hardware stores, that is.
You won't find it in Walmart I wouldn't expect. Northern Commercial
- used to be the Sears & Roebuck of Alaska and found in every town
but got bought out - don't know the name now - used to carry it in
every store. Buhach sort of faded over time, but recently I read
where it was available again in Alaska. Can't tell you where though.
You may just have to look around and do a lot of asking.
You might, as an alternative, try a product called "Ceracal" (sp).
It's a product you burn as well. Comes in a little flat box. Will
have several coils of this stuff inside. It's green and shaped like
a spiral. Mount a spiral on the metal tab that comes with it and set
the end on fire. It just sits and smolders like an old cigar. No
flame, just smoldering ash. The smoke given off drives out the
mosquitoes. I think it has pyrethrum flowers pressed into to it, but
don't remember for sure. Works pretty good though, but Buhach is the
best.
Here is a number that is supposed to be for Buhach........ 1-(866)
511-7107. I think 866 is a toll free number. Call and ask where to
find it.
In Anchorage, give a call to Mountain View Sports Center. They are a
hunting and fishing and camping outfitter store that usually has all
the little trick things for making living and outdoor sports
enjoyable in Alaska. If anyone has it they will. Sorry, I don't have
their phone number, but they have been around forever and should be
easy to find.
Good luck!
Enjoy your trip
